A Visual Model of Cloud Computing

You have heard much about "The Cloud" but, likely, have had little or no direct experience with it. You’ve heard much about Amazon Web Services (AWS) -- the Amazon Cloud – and that AWS is the commercial public cloud leader (Gartner Magic Quadrant). Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) is the AWS foundation for many other AWS cloud services. EC2 enables virtual machines in the cloud and provides, what Enterprise Architects refer to as, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). Many enterprises are enthusiastically migrating existing internally hosted applications from their data centers to AWS. Thus, many IT professionals world-wide are currently confronted with the challenge of quickly absorbing cloud computing concepts in general and AWS in particular.

Oftentimes the best way to understand a new and complex subject area is to study its data model. Based on the recently published book “A Conceptual Data Model For Amazon EC2,” this presentation provides a visual overview of Amazon EC2 with the help of a Conceptual Data Model (CDM) -- serving as a “mind map” of fundamental EC2 concepts. Primary objectives are to provide a rudimentary understanding of the Amazon Cloud … plus refresh our understanding of basic data modeling concepts … plus cultivate an appreciation that Data Modeling can be exploited for much more than just Database Design. The time it takes for achieving a confident overall understanding of Amazon EC2 can be substantially compressed with the help of a conceptual data model summarizing its many concepts and their interrelationships -- because pictures indeed are worth thousands of words.

Learning Objectives:

• Gain a basic understanding of Data Modeling
• Using Amazon EC2, realize that understanding data leads to an understanding of the system.
