Understanding Business Architecture

Tuesday, October 4, 2022 - 12:00 to Friday, October 7, 2022 - 16:00

About this event

Business architecture is a holistic view of the business defined by multiple components.

The business architecture decreases costs of business analysis activities for initiatives at both the enterprise analysis strategic level and at the project tactical level by using its components. It assures alignment of technology to business valued processes and improves business decision making by having visibility into business assets.

In this course you will gain a better understanding of what the business architecture is, what the components are within it, what is needed to build it and how it can be leveraged. Because the business architecture can have many components and artifacts, they may not all be applicable to every business. The key is to gain a “good enough” understanding to communicate benefits of relevant enterprise architecture components and artifacts and know which will provide the most business value.

Learning Objectives

  • The overall business architecture structure
  • Communicating the value of a business architecture
  • The various enterprise or business architecture frameworks and tools available
  • Addressing business concerns by leveraging business architecture stakeholder views
  • Building various components within a business architecture knowledge base
  • Using various tools to gain a better understanding of the business when a business architecture is not currently present or planned

Instructor – Shane Hastie

Shane has been a part of the business analysis community for the last four decades. One of the first people outside North America to gain CBAP certification, he was a member of the core team who led the work on Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK® v3), led the teams who produced both versions of the Agile Extension to the BABOK®, and was a contributor and reviewer for the Guide to Product Ownership Analysis. He is the Global Delivery Lead for SoftEd, based in New Zealand and working all around the world.

Shane has also recently co-authored his first book, #noprojects - A Culture of Continuous Value. He is about to publish his second book, The Rock Crusher, which explores how we can bridge the gap between business analysis and agile. It builds on the work he did as part of the core team defining the standard for the BABOK® v3 as well as his work co-authoring both versions of the Agile Extension to the BABOK®.

Shane's interests outside of work reflect his passion for making a difference in the lives of others. He is a Board of Trustees member for Te Awhi Rito Trust, a charity providing a safe space for local children. His love of coaching has extended to becoming a Leadership and Transformational Coach with the International Coaching Federation (ICF).
