Establishing Common Understanding

Providing a solution requires the entire team to have a shared understanding.  An understanding that includes want was requested, what is actually needed, and what will be delivered.  Many projects are considered a failure not because the solution was bad, but due to expectations not being aligned.
Project Managers and Business Analysis play a critical role in managing and aligning expectations.  This is not a trivial task.  Starting with scope and goals, continuing with workflows and requirements, to test scenarios and rollout, there are plenty of opportunities for confusion to be introduced.  Constant and consistent communication is key to fighting back this confusion.
This year's event will focus on improving the skills needed to contribute to a project success.  Skills for working with the project sponsors to establish clear, obtainable goals, skill for eliciting requirements from subject matter experts, skills for preparing models and presenting them to the team, and skills for supporting the technical teams as they prepare the solution to be delivered.  And the underlying soft skills that tie everything together: communication and leadership.

“Being a BA on a BADgile Project” by Steven A. Jones

You’ve heard stories from friends and colleagues - their agile project has gone “BADgile,” heading off the tracks while driving people to frustration and don’t know what to do next. Agile was supposed to solve all our problems. So why is delivery, backlog prioritization, and reducing defects so difficult? Even worse, BADgile delivery twisted the Manifesto to say "no documentation or requirements". With shorter delivery cycles, managing requirements as an asset is even more important in Agile than Waterfall because you don't have time to define everything up front. Agile Transformations have been going on for a couple of decades, so you would think companies late to the party would learn from best practices or their predecessors’ mistakes.

This session will help you:
  • Learn the real issue Agile was trying to solve,
  • Recognize the signs of a BADgile project,
  • Learn how communication can help get your project back on track.

“The Evolving Art of Refinement" by Jeremy Mann

The business analysis community has exemplified the skills and craft of refinement. Its members hold very similar strengths that draw our diverse perspectives together. These are rare skills that come naturally for business analysts ... the least of which is adaptability. As the needs we serve constantly evolve, so must we. Additionally, as servant leaders, we generally lead without authority and set the example and bar for others to follow suit. Our cooperation with product owners, sponsors, project managers, team leadership and a myriad of other personalities requires a skillful, deft and artistic touch. Refinement is, itself, an evolution of understanding that drives real-world change. It is truly the vehicle of the business analyst. We are not to be underestimated in our involvement within each step of this unique process.

This session will help you:
  • Define and understand the holistic meaning of refinement,
  • Understand the stages of refinement and how they relate the maturity of vision delivery,
  • Identify business analysis activities and key plates in each stage of refinement,
  • Identify simple assessments used to identify pitfalls in value delivery and how to course correct.
