Empowering Business Analysts for Data Analytics: Using AI to Enhance Classic Tools for Exploratory Data Analysis

Data is not just ubiquitous in the business environment; it has evolved into a strategic asset for organizations seeking a competitive edge. With the proliferation of computing power, widespread cloud infrastructure, affordable storage solutions, and the universal availability of data from various sources, organizations are now in a prime position to enhance and extend their analytical capabilities. Analytics initiatives have become standard practice, but the recent integration of AI capabilities offers a new dimension to this landscape. To be at the forefront of supporting data analytics initiatives, Business Analysts must now embrace upskilling that includes not only classic 'BA tools' but also the integration of AI into their skill set. This session will explore how BAs can leverage AI and classic analysis tools to empower their role in data analytics initiatives.

Key Focus Areas:

• How LLMs can assist BAs to jump-start elicitation of research questions and hypotheses.
• How BAs can use AI to analyze the structure of datasets and surface interesting hidden insights for further investigation
• How AI can assist analysts on demand with drafting complex SQL queries and Excel formulas to manipulate and analyze data.
• How AI can offer conversational support for questions that can be answered through data analytics techniques
• How AI can accelerate creation of exploratory data visualizations and dashboards by BAs

Session attendees will learn to leverage AI more fully for high-impact tasks—from framing analysis to querying data, modeling scenarios, creating compelling data visualizations, and effectively telling stories with data. We will explore how combining AI’s raw computational power with human analytical skills can boost productivity, creativity, accuracy, and coverage.

Tom Tomasovic

Tom is passionate about elevating the business analysis profession. He built the business analysis practice for a major healthcare payer from the ground up, hiring and mentoring a team that included several IIBA-certified professionals and supporting team members in their certification efforts. Before moving to Ohio, Tom was an active member of the NYC IIBA chapter, informally advising a study group to help others achieve IIBA certifications.

Tom, a seasoned BA professional with 20+ years of experience, has led a successful BA team and driven impactful projects across diverse industries including healthcare, wind technology, and consumer products. As a trainer and mentor, he has guided numerous individuals to IIBA certifications.

Holding 5 of the 7 IIBA offerings alongside expertise in Scrum, Agile BA, and beyond, Tom is passionate about continuous learning and empowering others.
